Renovating Your Bathroom to make it more Environmentally Friendly

Sometimes you start to wonder whether the whole world is ‘going bananas’ over eco-friendly stuff. Even I used to think that having eco-friendly bathrooms were rather absurd. However considering how crucial a bathroom is in any house, making it more eco-friendly does actually make sense.

You might already have some idea about making your bathroom more eco friendly. Doing a bathroom renovation merely in order to make your bathroom eco-friendly might not sound all that practical and this is not something that many can afford to do anyway. However keep in mind that making your bathroom more eco-friendly could prove to be a potential investment.

The first time I heard of eco-friendly bathrooms I thought that it was all about the bathroom products. I was quite wrong. Eco-friendly bathrooms have everything from eco-friendly bathroom products and architecture to eco-friendly systems. Making your bathroom ‘greener’ involves a lot more. It’s true that your choice of your toilet paper to the choice of your bathroom lighting could contribute in making your bathroom more eco friendly. There is more to it however and you might not be able to make all the necessary changes that could make your bathroom ‘greener’ through a small scale bathroom renovation.

I personally have tried to make at least the little adjustments possible in my bathroom and if you do the same, our combined efforts could make at least a little bit of difference.

Renovating Small Bathrooms

Until fairly recently even I had no idea that renovating a bathroom which is much smaller in size than a normal one, could be much more complicated than in the case of a normal bathroom renovation. A small bathroom renovation could be a quite a bit different. These changes apply to everything from the type of bathroom products to the colour combination’s that you use which you could use these changes to make your bathroom appear larger.

Many of you would probably know the normal tricks used during a bathroom renovation in order to make a bathroom appear bigger than its actual size. Using light color bathroom tiling, smaller and mounted basins are some techniques that both you and I are familiar with. However if you want something more out of your bathroom renovation you need some good ideas.

Your ideas should focus on maximizing on things like the natural lighting within the bathroom and minimizing the installation of any unnecessary bathroom products during the bathroom renovation. I also believe that sticking with classic fixtures, which is the advice given by many people, would be the best idea. However there are those sleeker new bathroom products that could also serve the purpose.

Tips on decorating your bathroom

All of us love to decorate our bathrooms with all types of new fixtures and fittings and a good range of accessories. Every one of us spends a good amount of time in the bathroom. Therefore, it is essential that we pay a lot of attention to decoration while renovating or improving our bathrooms at home. All it takes is a bit of creativity and of course awareness of the latest trends when it comes to bathroom styles today.

Always decorate your bathroom with items that are affordable and easy to maintain. Keep in mind that certain types of tiles, both wall and bathroom, require extra care based on whether it is made of stone or ceramic. Some tiles tend to chip more easily than others and tend to get scratched and stained. Look for these factors without buying tiles purely based on the designs and trends.

All other fixtures and accessories must be well coordinated with the rest of the bathroom to get an elegant finished look. Use the same colors and similar designs on all items. Lighting too must be given a lot of attention, especially when it’s your own private bathroom.

New design trends for bathrooms

Bathrooms today have evolved to unbelievable extents. With the help of technology, a bathroom can now be designed with a surround sound system, a High-Def television and so on. While technology was available to have in our living rooms, it is developments in plumbing that have made it possible to equip a bathroom with all kinds of luxuries.

The right tiles together with a lighting system can create a soothing sense for a calming shower at the end of a day. Tiles can be selected in any color and texture to suit personal tastes. Attractive colors brighten up the bathroom, giving a warm feeling to it. Lighting with a dimming switch will allow for varying light intensities. This way the lights could be made bright when taking a shave or dim when relaxing in the hot tub. With all these new features the bathroom will become the new living room.

Bathroom designs

Bathrooms are of high importance even though we fail to notice it. The fact is that a bathroom is where we begin our day and end it; it is the first place we walk into after a long day of work in hope of some repose. Hence, when designing a bathroom and maintaining it, it must be done effectively.

Many tend to think that placing the fixtures in the right places and sorting out the plumbing would do; but designing the bathroom doesn’t stop there. It needs creativity and a touch of class. The bathroom design must be according to the person who will use it. Preferably, the master bedroom’s bathroom (or en-suite) should be spacious and elegant, designed in colours such as grey, white or beige.

A kid’s bathroom can be more fun and colorful (even designed according to a theme like an animal theme, aquarium theme or even a cartoon theme). The possibilities in designing the bathroom are endless. Fixtures of your choice are available in the market today. All you need is an artistic, plus well planned out, set of ideas.

Ways to make your bathroom look bigger

You are not alone if you feel claustrophobic in your bathroom. A bathroom is a place where you should feel comfortable and peaceful. Many of us however, unintentionally use the wrong type of paints, bathroom fittings etc. creating a cramped up feeling. There are ways to undo this damage and make your small bathroom look bigger.

Using light colored paints on walls and the ceiling will give the illusion of a bigger space. If you’re a person who likes bright colors, use other perks such as bathroom accessories with color. Also, installing additional lights in dark corners will eliminate the cramped feeling. To make it look even bigger, it is a good idea to add mirrors. The reflections off mirrors also give the appearance of a bigger space. Another important change should be the floors. If you don’t already have light colored tiles on your floor, change them for light colors. Dark floors tend to swallow up light and make any space look small.

Bathroom design ideas

Out of the many different bathroom design ideas available, aquarium themes for bathrooms have attracted me greatly. It struck me as a creative, attractive and adventurous. As parents of youngsters some of you may actually know how touch it is to get a kid in the bath. So these kinds of themes (including fairytale themes, nature themes and western themes with cowboys, etc.) can make the minutes your kid spends in the bathroom fun.

Painting the walls with decorative fish, oceanic flora, submarines, rocks and all sorts of other related pictures is great. Using a bit of deco including real rocks and potted plants (placed safely, of course), and toys will add to the effect. You needn’t necessarily spend fortunes to make such creative bathroom ideas real. All you need is proper planning and resource organization and your kid will undoubtedly benefit from a whole new, endlessly fun bathroom experience.

Choosing the right tiling when renovating a bathroom

Trust me, choosing the right tiling for your bathroom could be so frustrating; and many variables such as price, texture, color and surface conditions wouldn’t make it easier for us by any means. I knew tiling plays a major role in how my bathroom would look, which is why it was crucial for me to get the right ones; because if not I could have ended up spending a heap of money and with a bathroom that is pretty much same as it was before renovating, or sometimes even worse. That is why I’m going to share my tips for choosing the tiling for a bathroom renovation.

When renovating a bathroom you would generally have a theme for the new one, therefore the tiling should adhere to that theme; for example if you want a more serene natural feeling in your bathroom you should go for a theme that would mimic nature. Then you should choose a tile that is of the colors and textures of natural stones, rather than going for an elegant white porcelain one. Also make sure to get to know the surface condition of tile, because some tiles can be very slippery. You should specially take this into account if you have children and elderly in your house. Get to know what you need first and then hit the shops, as this would enable you to get the perfect tiling for your bathroom renovation.

Testimonials

“We recently renovated our tied and out of date bathroom with Tubs and Tiles. The end result was exactly what we were hoping for. Every tradesman on the job performed their task with absolute perfection and we were very impressed with all of them, from the tiler, electricans, cabinet maker and painter. Phil and Janelle, the owners of Tubs and Tiles, “bent over backwards” to ensure all jobs were done on time, helped us with product choices and followed through at every stage. We would highly recommend Tubs and Tiles to any of our friends and family, and should we need to renovate our other bathroom, they will be the first, and only, company we call.”
